Secondary NQT Training - 2019/20

Outline

These courses aim to give secondary NQTs continued professional development in critically important areas.

Description

At Bexley we are passionate about helping and supporting our NQTs at this crucial stage of their career. We therefore offer a focused programme of professional development for our NQTs. By offering high-quality support, using the expertise within Bexley to share everything we know about being an effective teacher, we can help make your NQT induction a positive start to your teaching career. Across London, training by Appropriate Bodies for secondary NQTs is very limited we are one of a few ABs that offer a comprehensive training schedule for NQTs. The NFER in their recent annual report (25 Feb 2019) cited that ‘the secondary system is facing a substantial teacher supply challenge over the next decade, which requires urgent action.’ They also found that ‘…retention rates of early-career teachers (between two and five years into their careers) have dropped significantly between 2012 and 2018.’ As a local authority, we need to provide support in order to recruit and retain a skilled workforce in order to improve the life chances of our children in Bexley schools and beyond.

This training programme provides high quality professional development and learning opportunities that will enable teachers new to the profession to meet the Teachers’ Standards and become a truly effective and successful teacher. The programme runs over four terms and includes facilitated sessions led by experienced practitioners and advisors. Teachers will regularly have the opportunity to observe and learn from excellent teachers throughout the year. NQTs will benefit from experienced facilitators to gain strategies for immediate use to demonstrate impact within their own classrooms.

Examples of sessions provided are:

  • Autism
  • Behaviour for Learning
  • Interactive Teaching/Learning
  • Exploring Data and Progress against Progress 8
  • Challenge & Differentiation
  • Being a Form Tutor
  • Behaviour for Learning
