Teaching Science in the Primary Years

Are your teachers confident in teaching your students to work scientifically, through investigative approaches that are engaging and meaningful?

Outline

This science course is a once in a lifetime opportunity. It is made up of five sessions across the year, that help upskill and support your subject leader in leading their subject within your school. The course will cover many current areas including how to monitor progression within the topic; using the correct terminology and how to teach science through an investigative approach.
The science course will be led by Teri Funk. Teri is a Subject Leader of Education for science. Her passion is keeping science fun through investigative approaches that are engaging and meaningful.
The five sessions are:
7th November – Science investigation and using correct terminology;
12th December - How to teach tricky science topics without alienating your students? For example, Evolution.
23rd January – How to provide challenge and deepen learning;
6th February - tbc - area identified by the schools
24th April – How to monitor or moderation science books for progression

Description

An example of the session:
Session One
Improving investigative skills and the use of correct terminology in science. How do I do experiments properly with KS 1 and 2 students?
A 90 minute session on investigative skills in science and how to carry out fun and important experiments safely in a primary setting, and present the information gathered correctly.

1.30 Sessions start with brief introduction and outline for each session.
1.40 Establish existing knowledge of parameters of investigations and use of correct terminolgy.
1.45 Carry out some simple investigations and look at the skills required to understand the objective of the experiment.
2.15 Identify the variable, look at various demonstrations to identify the variables and the importance of them in carrying out valid experiments.
2.30 How to present the data they have obtained correctly.
2.45 What does assessment look like for experiments.
3.00 Arrangements for next session and gather feedback and evaluation.
