Teaching in Years 4 and 5 English and Mathematics Curriculum

Are you ready for the transition between Years 4 and 5?

Outline

Year 4 and 5 teachers will explore the pitch and coverage for their year groups and the transition between Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2. In the morning sessions, Teachers will explore the importance of teaching of decimal place value, the formal written methods and how they can use CPA to support their conceptual understanding and support the learning outcomes for all children. Lisa Findley MaST Teacher and Leading Mathematics Teacher will be leading the mathematics session and sharing her expertise.
In the English session in the afternoon, Year 4 & 5 teachers will look at creative ways of inspiring reading and teaching spelling and writing. Teachers will explore ideas and resources that support the learning outcomes in both year groups. Sarah Mortimer, Assistant Head Teacher, Literacy Lead at Hurst Primary and lead borough moderator for KS2 writing, will lead the session and share her expertise.

Description

To ensure that children are suitably challenged through the clarification of the pitch and expectation in each year group.
To explore and identify the topics that are specific to each year group as well as those that underpin mathematical teaching across the Key Stages.
To explore the use of concrete materials to support the CPA approach; creating firm foundations to be built upon.
To share updates for the Year 4 multiplication tests in 2020 and resources that can be used to support this.
To explore the teaching and assessment of reading.
To investigate creative ways of teaching spelling.
To examine the teaching of writing, find ways to incorporate grammar exercises creatively and look at how to extend more able writers.

Outcomes

Teachers will be equipped with the knowledge and understanding to deliver in depth coverage of the year 4 and 5 curriculum; including decimal place value, multiplication tables and the written formal methods. Teachers will have a clearer understanding of the pitch and expectations for these year groups.
Teachers will be provided with ideas and opportunities to creatively teach English and to try them out in class. There will be a piece of action research to carry out in preparation for the second session in January.
